Rameder accessories transform any vehicle into a van
A car that can adapt to suit the space requirements of its owners would be perfect for the holidays, but sadly that is still a dream of the future. However, with the right tools, this dream of the future is starting to come true - think roof boxes, bicycle carriers and towbars. Rameder, the market leader in transportation accessories, explains what to watch out for when selecting and using accessories.
Trailer
A trailer opens up a virtually unlimited range of possibilities, from caravans to boat trailers. Rule
of thumb: Trailer and towing vehicle should be compatible. Even most small cars can pull a
lightweight caravan or small trailer for transport jobs. For horse boxes or Airstreams, large SUVs,
heavy sedans or vans are undoubtedly required. The permissible towing weight and the maximum
vertical load will provide exact reference values. Rameder lists the relevant data for all its vehiclespecific
products on its website at www.rameder.eu. For trailers with tandem or single axles, the
effective vertical load can be manipulated through smart positioning of the cargo. Heavy objects
should rest above the wheels in order to not negatively impact the leverage. By placing a scale
under the jockey wheel of the trailer, the weight acting on the tow bar can be checked easily. The
use of an anti-yaw hitch can improve the trailing behaviour and prevents dangerous rocking. Load
securing is another important point: Overhanging or unevenly loaded objects, which could slip,
must be secured with lashing straps. For light-weight, loose cargo, we recommend a safety net.
The parked trailer should also be secured with a special lock against theft. Suitable accessories
can be ordered directly from Rameder at www.rameder.eu.
Bike Carrier
Carrier systems for the towing hitch, the roof or the tailgate are commonly used. In addition,
indoor-systems for the vehicle interior are available for large vans or SUVs. Transport systems for
roofs or tail gates impress with their low price; however, carriers for the towing hitch are a
particularly practical and safe choice. This is a relatively wind-free position for the carriers, and they
are extremely stable and have a low noise level. The good aerodynamics mean only a small
amount of additional fuel consumption is required (rarely more than half a litre), which has a
positive impact on the travel budget. In addition, the almost ground-level position for loading is
extremely convenient. Roof or tail gate carriers are not a realistic alternative, especially for heavy ebikes.
Another advantage of transport on the towing hitch: Some carriers can be extended from
two to three storing positions or can alternatively be equipped with luggage boxes, transport trays
or brackets for winter or water sport equipment.
Roof box
Storage boxes for roof assembly are available in various sizes and often have the same loading
capacity as a second boot. In contrast to traditional racks, the load is protected against water, wind
and theft. In addition, the aerodynamic aspects of the vehicle are affected far less, ensuring lower
additional fuel consumption than in open transport. For small-scale objects, the roof box is a clever
choice as well. Heavy and sharp objects must be effectively secured against slipping; otherwise
they could turn into a dangerous projectile during heavy braking or in an accident. Integrated
lashing straps are therefore part of the standard equipment for all Rameder’s roof boxes.
Additionally, empty spaces at the top of the container can be cushioned with an old blanket. If you
can, pack heavy objects in the normal car boot and only load light objects - as evenly as
possible - on the roof. This lowers the centre of gravity of the vehicle and improves driving
performance. In no case should the maximum roof load of the car or the load limit of the roof box be
exceeded. There is no general speed limit, however most manufacturers do not recommend driving
faster than 130 km/h. In any case, the following applies: If you don’t drive at full speed, you will
arrive at your destination without major additional fuel consumption, even with a roof box. To
protect against thieves, e.g. when you are taking a break from driving, consistent use of the
integrated lock system is recommended.
